HOME Made: Emma’s crochet
Welcome to HOME Made, where we’re delving into some of the cool skills and hobbies our clever bunch of Homies have.
This time we’re checking in with Digital Media Manager, Emma Eden, about her crochet creations.
What is it you do?
How long have you been doing it?
Just over 4 months now.
How often do you do it?
Every day in the evenings.
What do you love about it?
It gets me off my phone, and it’s very relaxing. Plus you can make lots of nice things to wear or for the house.
How did you get into it?
My mum has crocheted for years and always wanted to me to learn so that we can make things together. Having more time at home this year means I’ve finally got round to learning.
Who or what inspires and influences you?
My mum (of course), bright colours, and festival wear! There are also some shops and Instagram accounts such as Shop Fluffy, Hooked MCR and WildOrangeTree which make some amazing things, so I like to get some ideas from those.
Any top tips for people wanting to get into crochet?
Buy a crochet book that explains how to read a pattern and how to make the basic stitches. Start with a standard crochet hook (around 5mm) and practice with a double knit wool (Stylecraft Special DK works great) until you’ve got into the swing of it. There is also a YouTube account called Bella Coco that explains the techniques really well!
Have you had any epic fails along the way?
Not from what I’ve made, but I did accidentally buy the wrong size bag of toy stuffing and now have enough to last me about 10 years!
What has your proudest moment been?
Setting up an Instagram account recently to start showing some of the things I’ve been making with the aim of starting to sell. Not quite there yet, but watch this space.
What is your favourite thing you’ve done so far?
I’ve started making some backpacks which I’ve completely made up myself, but can’t wait to wear them when festivals start up again!
